Single Review: Matt Cardle – When We Collide

So series 7 of the UK X Factor is officially over. And by that it means, we finally have a new winner – a new winner we would like not to suffer the fate of Steve Brooks, Shayne Ward (almost), Leon Jackson and the recent Joe McElderry whose new single btw peaked at #68 in the UK charts this week. Anyway, that also means we will not see Cheryl and we’ll be Danii-less until next year. The good thing is One Direction didn’t win and the ‘person who came out of her shell’ Rebecca came 2nd which isn’t really a bad thing since she’d be off to a proper mega career soon. Then there’s Matt Cardle, the once sleeveless Painter-Decorator from Essex who seems to have loads of likable things about him. Although we didn’t expect this, his untimely cover of Biffy Clyro’s ‘Many of Horror’ is a very clever and risque thing to do and we applaud him for that.

It seems that Matt is one of the favourite acts to win since the series started and week by week he gave us stunning big performances in which he utilised his huge vocals to his advantage. So the winner’s single, a cover of an ‘underrated’ track which we seldom get from ‘The X Factor’ with an intended name change just to suit the music buying public’s preference is a brilliant one. Although personally, I prefer the original he did a solid, well-arranged version that will probably zoom into the charts without a doubt. And for the record, it’s a big relief that we won’t have to worry about this winner’s capability of superstardom or eligibility for the Christmas #1. It’s already given.

SINGLE REVIEW: Bruno Mars – Grenade

It’s highly justifiable that Bruno Mars is one of the best male artists to come out and shower us with amazing talent and music this year. He’s name got the biggest impact as his début single, ‘Just The Way You Are’ became a monster single and went number 1 across the globe. The Filipino-Puerto Rican crooner has a stunning voice and magnificent songwriting skills that carves into the hearts of every girl who hears him. ‘Grenade’ for example is straight to the heart with enough conviction and power to put chills running down on your spine.

‘Grenade’ – another track that speaks of his thoughts about the opposite sex but is somehow opposite to the message of ‘Just The Way You Are’. The big powerful impact of the tracks instruments has provided an extreme atmosphere to the message of the track itself. Bruno sings with enough disappointment in ‘I would go through all this pain, take a bullet strike through my brain…’ – an assuring line that he would do everything for the woman he loves and still won’t get the love he deserves. It’s kind of depressing if you’d look into it but it’s a brilliant song incorporated with an amazing vocal that gives him an assurance that he can do a lot more things than what we know. Mega.

FIRST LISTEN: Adele – Rolling In The Deep (New Single)

British Grammy Award winner Adele premieres the much awaited first single off her sophomore album, 21. The track ‘Rolling In The Deep’ will be featured in her new LP set to be released early next year.

‘Rolling In The Deep’ is still pretty much in the same element as Adele’s other tracks from ’19’. You actually don’t expect so much difference from artists like her because the soul in each song is pretty much just the thing you’re looking for. The jazzy, soulful beats of this track isn’t striking at first listen but it’s getting more interesting as you hit the play for a few  more times. Compared to ‘Chasing Pavements’ and the entirety of ’19’, ‘Rolling In The Deep’ is a sign that ’21’ might produce a more adult, contemporary and jazz incorporated with enough soul for our earbuds. Let’s just hope this is true.

DAILY BEAT: Ke$ha – Cannibal

I ended the ‘Animal’ era on a negative note when I told myself Ke$ha’s just a party animal who decided to get drunk and make such catchy, record-breaking music. Unfortunately, with the string array of singles she has released – I’m forced to eat those words. From the quirky ‘Tik Tok’ rip-off ‘We R Who We R’, to the  sounds of  ‘Sleazy’ I’m convinced her new EP, ‘Cannibal’ might sound actually a lot better than what I am expecting.

This new track, released to the Australian iTunes (it’s like they’re always getting the new Ke$ha singles) ‘Cannibal’ is ferociously brilliant. With explicitly clever lyrics, ‘Use your finger to stir my tea, And for dessert I’ll suck your teeth, Be too sweet, and you’ll be a goner. Yep, I’ll pull a Jeffrey Dahmer’. and an interesting party beat – you’ll love this the more you spin it. Well, it’s one thing Ke$ha’s music have been proved of.

Single Review: McFly – Shine A Light (feat. Taio Cruz)

I don’t know what happened to McFly when all of a sudden they’re back with their fittest bods, oozing sex appeal and a more pop sounding music. Usually, the punk/rock band gives us those head banging rock tunes but with their new-found change of style, they’re becoming like the male counterpart of The Saturdays and a new rival for JLS, The Wanted and OneDirection except they play bloody good with their instruments. Adding to the surprise, their new single features UK R&B sensation Taio Cruz in this poppy, boy-band sounding ‘Shine A Light’.

To be roughly honest with you, I didn’t really pay attention to McFly’s music way back then when they started in 2004. I had a couple of tracks on my iPod which I liked before but they kind of veered away into my music circulation since then. ‘Shine A Light’ boosts a typical boyband chorus – a midtempo, electropop track that oozes with Cruz’s synths and a catchy ‘Eh Eh’ squirming around the background. At first, you may kind of think that this pair won’t work but the result is quite convincing and we’re loving every minute of it.

DAILY BEAT: Rihanna – What’s My Name (feat. Drake)

‘OH NA NA, WHAT’S MY NAME’ - that line has been stuck in my head for the past two days now. Thanks to Rihanna’s latest smash single, ‘What’s My Name’ off from her much anticipated LP, ‘Loud’ out November. The new track co-written and produced by hit factory Stargate is expected to be making impact as to precede the release of her album.

‘What’s My Name’ blurts out every bit of swag glittering all over the entire track. There’s so much hip-hop going on but  it didn’t blur out that Rihanna’s an R&B singer and with the help of Drake’s rapping abilities- it sort of balanced everything just right in the box. The production is amazing and didn’t mind Rihanna showing off some of her finest vocal chops towards the bridge there. ‘What’s My Name?’ seems to be another one of her effortless hits in the making.

This ladies and gents puts Rihanna back where she belongs – not in those creepy leather knickers she has been wearing over the ‘Rated R’ era.

So this new Black Eyed Single, ‘The Time’…

… Is total crap. Sorry but the same hype we got from ‘Boom Boom Pow’ and ‘I Gotta Feeling’ just got lost in this one. ‘The Time’ sounds like a not-so-good cover of Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes ‘The Time of My Life’ back in 1987 remixed into something incohesive, scattered in its 5 minutes of utter disaster. Don’t get the impression we’re not going to EVER like this but for now, let’s just put this in the recycle bin for good.

The single will be included in BEP’s new LP, ‘The Beginning’ which will see a November 30th release.

Single Review: Duffy – Well, Well, Well

Welsh soul singing sensation Duffy is one of the few artists that aren’t easy to like from first listen. I can vividly remember when she first came into the music spotlight back in 2008 with her debut smash single, ‘Mercy’ – from then on Duffy became a worldwide phenomenon. With numerous awards accompanying her success including a Grammy Award you can absolutely bet on it she’ll deliver exceptional music anytime.

‘Well, Well, Well’ is the first single off Aimee Ann Duffy’s sophomore LP titled ‘Endlessly’. ‘Well, Well, Well’ is no ‘Mercy’ but still has her rich, soulful unique vocals embedded in it. The track having its same structure as most of Duffy’s songs in her previous LP, ‘Well’ attracts many listeners  with its sultry, big band production incorporated with an infectious chorus tagline. Dancy, upbeat and with a little touch of soul – it’s too early to say but I think we already have another hit here.

Single Review: Mike Posner – Please Don’t Go (+Music Video)

Ever since Mike Posner came unto the spotlight with a swaggery, angst-filled R&B anthem turned into a monster smash, I had laid my ears on him since. The 22 year-old alumnus from Duke University is conquering charts all over the world. With a smash single, pretty much satisfactory debut LP he’s got everything going on and we all know, his music isn’t that hard to like. The track ‘Please Don’t Go’ pretty much sums up every greatness Mike showered on his debut – an electronic pop smash stomper growing every time you play it. That’s the quality you’d want to have in today’s pop male artists – combined with every bit of the necessary swagger that doesn’t make him a bit all too cocky.

All things aside, the fact that this is co-produced by one of the most sought after music producers, Benny Blanco whom of which helped to make hits like ‘California Gurls’, ‘Dynamite’, ‘Tik Tok’ among others possible is on heck of an anthem. Consider this as Mike’s best possible hit on his debut record as ‘Please Don’t Go’ generates every bit electronic hype, combined with a lil’ bit of hip-hop influence squirming around in the track’s atmosphere – you’d likely be hearing this song in clubs, radios for a long time if God permits. And for the record, I’d be utterly devastated if this doesn’t become a monster hit.

Single Review: Ke$ha – We R Who We R

Guess who’s the bitch that’s back? You’ve got it right, it’s the severely autotuned, party animal Ke$ha Sebert (with a ‘$’) with her brand new single that doesn’t give us anything but ‘Tik Tok’-ish era once again. Well, what do you expect to come out from her? At least she’s releasing some good stuff right? The new single, ‘We R Who We R’ is just one of the gazillion tracks that leaked following the release of her smashing drunky album ‘Animal’ earlier this year.

The truth is, ‘We R Who We R’ isn’t such a bad track. Clearly, its influences may come from a bit of Katy Perry’s, and the hook reminds us of Wynter Gordon’s dysfunctional single, ‘Dirty Talk’ – which hardly gained any popularity since its release. Its calibre isn’t something you’d jump out of your seat but its pop-friendly attitude makes it easily likable in myriad ways. I’m not saying Ke$ha’s a good artist whom we all need in our pop music lives but admit it, it’s good to have a guilty pleasure sometimes eh?

‘We R Who We R’ is the first single off Sebert’s new EP, ‘Cannibal’ to be released November 22nd.
